Superb 8 Day Tour of Ireland My wife and I just finished an 8 day tour of Ireland with John. We saw Ireland from coast to coast with so much in between! Be it the City of Dublin, Galway, The Cliffs of Moher, The Dingle Peninsula or the many quaint towns and villages along the way we saw it all and more. We had never been to Ireland and had no clue as to where to go, what to see or where to stay. With John's help and guidance we had a wonderful flawless experience. John's fantastic knowedlge of Irish history is a real gift that we greatly appreciated. My wife and I highly recommend John Ducie as your tour guide for Ireland!!

Dublin for a Day John was a great tour guide. He picked up our Family of 12 at our VRBO and gave us a comprehensive tour of our requested sites in Dublin.
Fantastic City tour of Dublin Had an absolutely wonderful tour with John. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and so helpful in showing us the city
Genealogy Tours John researched two of our ancestors who left Ireland in the 1750's. There are not many records from that era unless your ancestor was rich or a criminal. John tracked the family name and connected it to the area where the family name was or could now be found. We visited multiple sites and John explained what was happening before and after our ancestors left. We were unable to make direct connections with ancestors but we have an appreciation of where they lived, what life was like for them, what caused them to leave and who was in control of the region. We highly recommend John as a tour guide.

Belfast and the Titanic Museum John picked up us in Dublin from our cruise ship, and took us to Belfast and the Titanic Museum. It was a great day, John is so knowledgeable about the history of Ireland and really explained it well. He kept us well entertained for the whole day. His vehicle was immaculate and a pleasure to ride in and he had water for us for the trip. Couldn't have asked for a better guide or a better day. Thank you John. Happy to recommend him to any people looking for tours. He is also very knowledgeable in history in general and economics. He is a very well rounded person and a pleasure to spend the day with.
One of the Highlights of our Trip! A day long tour of Dublin with John. He is very knowledgeable in Irish history and tells stories in a very entertaining manner. He took us to many famous sights and gave us a good understanding of the city. He is a great ambassador for Ireland. He is also an expert in genealogy. I plan to send him some documents to track down my great grandfather. Book John's tour.......you won't be sorry!

John = The Only Guide For Me! I am a university professor from the US, and John is the only guide I use year after year. The students and I greatly benefit from his intelligence and professionalism, not to mention feeling safe as we drive through the narrow and winding roads of Ireland's beautiful countryside. We take the "Celts and Castles" tour and the "Wicklow Mountains, Powerscourt, and Glendalough" tour. We learn an incredible amount and leave Ireland with a deep appreciation for its history, culture, and traditions. I highly recommend John and hope he never retires! :-)

6 Stars For Professor John! Our family of 4 and cruise friend recently had the tour of our life with John! Yes I call him professor and you will to with his wealth of knowledge of the land and its people of Ireland, and how it relates to world history. And yes he gets 6 stars for his commitment to giving us the experience we had and one of the best times of our trip to Ireland. The 6 months before our tour with all our planning and changes in plans up until the morning of, John was working for us and communicating the best way to maximize our time. We ended up visiting St Patrick’s Cathedral, Wicklow mountains, Powerscourt and gardens, lunch at the Johnny Fox’s the “highest pub” in Ireland, Trinity College Library and “Book of Kells” and stops in between, all in 1 day! If you want a 6 Star tour and guide of Ireland John is your guy. Thank you John for your care and professional attention to giving us an unforgettable tour of Dublin and a true Irish experience!
Small group Tour of Ireland John Ducie was our private driver/guide for a 13 day whirlwind tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland in September 2018. John is professional, kind, and so knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to recommend John for a day tour or a multi day tour. His love for his country is evident. Everyone in the group was happy with my choice for our guide and we all give him a great big THUMBS UP! Thank you John!!

Irish Records

Civil Records of births marriages and deaths start for everyone in 1864 after the major wave of migration to the new world.

The only census available begin in 1901, prior to 1901 they were mostly destroyed.
Property and land valuations are used instead of Census to locate 19 th century households.
Occupation and street directories are also of assistance in that regard. Generally its possible
to work both church, civil and taxation records together to identify where a family was living
prior to emigration.

Languages and

The majority spoke Gaelic Irish well into the 19 th century but their surnames were generally recorded phonetically or in translation in English by those creating the records.

This is the origin of a great deal of variant spellings and forms to be negotiated. In addition personal names are frequently either recorded in their Latin form by clergy or in an English equivalent. Scots language names are also recorded in English in records with variants in spellings as a result.

Place Names and Parishes

Civil Parishes are used for taxation purposes and land record purposes.

Church parishes do not necessarily share the same boundaries or names as civil parishes More local place names such as townlands are recorded phonetically in English but were actually in Gaelic or in a minority of cases in Scots with the result that many variant spellings can occur.
